Recent research has produced some surprising solutions to these difficult problems. Published material from the research lab of Joseph LeDoux at NYU and Dr. Roger Callahan in California have shown that fear memories, when activated, can be disrupted. As mentioned above, all behavior begins with a thought. This new research suggests that when behavior is driven, at least in part, by an area of the brain called the amygdala, it becomes possible to de-link the thought from the emotional response. What this means is that if we think about something and activate the corresponding physical and emotional response, we can extinguish the response But not always. We are currently working on why some people do so well while others have continuing problems. For a more complete scientific understanding, please see the paper written by Dr. Ruden and references therein.
